Chapter 5 - Truth is stranger than fiction

As the buds of new growth appeared and winter’s icy fingers subsided for yet another year, James arrived at East Wing one morning to find that Yvonne’s desk was cleared.  As he looked around, Yvonne entered the office with a packing box.

“Morning James, sorry I only got the news late last night, so decided to get an early start, with the packing.”

She paused for a moment and then said, “There’s been a re-structure…Fergan's office is empty,.....I’m the new lead. There was silence as the unspoken was spoken. Smiling, Yvonne said, "You too have news."

The next morning, instead of walking to East Wing as he had done the past year, James caught the lift to the Executive Suite.

The familiarity of the offices washed over him as he entered the area. He neared his office and greeted Judi, his personal assistant. She looked up when she heard him and said, "Hello James." She stopped for a moment and then said, "I hope you enjoyed your change.” It was said more rhetorically rather than as a question. Still James replied, "Yes, it was...worthwhile."

Judi's lips quivered and rather than smiling, she grimaced as James entered his office. He looked around, thinking how good it was to be back.

“Morning James,” said Rodger, as he walked by. He stopped for a moment and said, “Good to have you back. I hope you enjoyed your sojourn…”

Like Judi's, his smile too turned into a grimace and without pausing, James replied, “Yes, Rodger, it was very…enlightening..”

Rodger, clearing his throat, said, "good, good, see you at catch ups" before scurrying away.

Suzanne, too appeared at James' door, and greeted James with a rather too brilliant smile. James steadied his gaze and Suzanne sensing James was in no mood to speak, quickly moved away, while calling out, "See you at catch ups.

“Just another day,” thought James. He switched on his PC and began where he had left off almost a year ago.
